What is a Venn diagram?

A Venn diagram (or set diagram) is a graphical representation of the relationships between two or more sets of elements. Using overlapping circles or other shapes, Venn diagrams highlight the similarities and differences between sets. Venn diagrams are widely used in mathematics, computer science, business, and related fields.

How to make a Venn diagram

Define your sets

Consider the following questions: What sets are you comparing and why? How many sets are you comparing?

Open Lucidchart

If starting from a blank document, drag overlapping circles onto the canvas for each set you’re comparing. If you need help getting started or want a polished layout, start from a Lucidchart template with the number of circles you need.

Label your circles

Add a text box to each overlapping circle (or use text boxes provided within pre-configured templates) to label one circle for each set.

Add shared elements

For each element the sets have in common, drag a sticky note into the area where the circles overlap. Add text to each sticky note.

Add unique elements

For each element unique to one set, drag a sticky note into the area where the circles don’t overlap. Add text to each sticky note.
